Electrics in the Home

Most homes will have a large number of appliances that require electricity to power them, from the dishwasher and washing machine to the play station and computer. To enable their operation, it is essential that a comprehensive system of electrical wiring and operating switches are properly installed by a qualified professional.

However, from time-to-time, every home owner knows there are occasions when ‘quick-fixes’ are required on the electrical circuitry, for example replacement of a blown fuse. In such circumstances, it is vitally important that the basic principles of electric problem-shooting are adhered to, and these are:

• In the first instance, before attempting any works, the main power supply to the home must be shut down at the mains fuse box. Work should never start until this has happened.
• Anyone attempting electrical work in their home should have a basic understanding of electrics and have read an electrical wiring DIY manual or reference book.
• All electrical wiring is colour coded to avoid the risk of connecting wrong wires together

The most common power supply problem that occurs in the home is the blown fuse. Before changing the fuse it is necessary to first correct the problem that caused it to blow in the first place e.g. an appliance requiring a higher amperage than the fuse permits. The circuit breaker will automatically ‘trip’ the problem area in the home and shut down the power leading from the culprit appliance. Circuit breakers provide a safety assurance to homeowners as they help to prevent electrical fires caused by power surges overloaded the circuit and also will stop the apparatus that is drawing the electricity from being damaged beyond use.
